Alexandra Cormack

2024 Short-Term Workforce Fellow

Alex Cormack graduated from the Master of Marine and Environmental Science program at the University of the Virgin Islands in 2024. She soon completed an 8-week Securing STEM Island Pathways Fellowship, mentored by Dr. Marilyn Brandt, where she worked on a variety of innovative projects. These included heat-stressing corals in land-based nurseries before out-planting to test resilience to bleaching events, as well as monitoring and collecting coral spawn to support coral sexual reproduction.

The fellowship provided Alex with valuable opportunities to build skills and professional relationships, ultimately helping her transition into her next career step. She is now pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo with Dr. Robin Smith – a connection she made while a master’s student and SSIP Short-term Workforce Fellow at UVI.
